3 Job Search Mistakes You're Already Making in 2015

It's a new year, but old habits die hard. When it comes to your job search, are you holding on to the mistakes you made last year? Let's take a look at some of the common pitfalls of your job search and resolve to make some changes in the new year.

1. You're Not Giving Yourself Enough Credit

Job descriptions can oftentimes scare jobseekers out of applying for a particular position, even if they're perfectly qualified for the role. Employers typically elaborate on specific details regarding a job they're looking for in an effort to weed out unqualified applicants. As a jobseeker, you should feel empowered by your experiences and ability to train effectively. This doesn't mean go ahead and apply for every position you stumble upon, but rather, take some time to evaluate the requirements for the job. If your skill set and abilities closely align with the position (but don't necessarily include all of the skills the employer is looking for), you should submit an application. You never know, some employers are willing to train the right person! Give yourself the credit you deserve.

2. You're Not Organized

I can't say this enough. The success of your job search hinges on how organized you are during the process. If you lose track of applications, versions of your resume, cover letters, and critical contacts, then the sad reality is - you're doing it wrong. Use the refreshing feeling of starting a new year to become more organized in your job search. If you're not a checklist person, there's nobody saying you can't become one. Seriously - don't miss out on a fantastic job opportunity because you don't have your act together.

3. You Aren't Using Your Network

Using your network of professionals in the industry is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door for a new job. Take some time to reach out to colleagues, mentors, and friends you know who could help you identify opportunities and perhaps even get called for an interview. Networking isn't dead, so don't kill your job search by ignoring the people in your immediate professional network.
